Caffeine May Reduce Fertility
San Diego, Calif. – July 1, 2011 – Professor Sean Ward from the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine in Reno has recently conducted an intriguing study examining the link between caffeine consumption and reduced fertility. His findings have been published in the British Journal of Pharmacology.
In an experiment conducted with mice, Professor Ward and his team discovered that caffeine reduces muscle activity in the Fallopian tubes that carry eggs from a woman’s ovaries to her uterus. While it was generally assumed that cilia, tiny hair-like projections located in the tubes, were primarily responsible for gently aiding the eggs to the uterus, Ward’s study indicates that the muscle contractions in the wall of the tubes may play a larger role. In the study, caffeine stopped specialized pacemaker cells from coordinating muscle contractions in the tubes of mice and, as a result, inhibited the movement of the eggs.
This study was conducted with mice but may provide an answer as to why women who consume large amounts of caffeine often take long to conceive than women who do not.
